Lacey and Larkin-Champions of the People
The Trump administration has changed the world of immigration with mandates and travel bans. Persistence talk of building a wall to stop unwanted immigration was the cornerstone of Trump’s campaign strategy. Since he has begun to put into law his immigration policies, minorities have lived in fear. The recent developments in DACA have put into question the children of immigrants, who have spent their entire lives in this country. There are many organizations who strive to assist immigrants in this time of need. Here are some that have been in the news recently:
Families for Freedom-works with groups of migrants and their immediate families who are in danger of being deported. Families for Freedom is made up of former immigrants.
The International Refugee Assistance Project-encourages law students and attorneys to give legal aid to immigrants and their families.
The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund helps organizations who advocate for immigration and civil rights. Lacey and Larkin are activists who were arrested by Sheriff Joe Arpaio in 2007 for exposing injustice in the police department. The pair were granted a settlement for $3.75 million and used it to begin the Frontera Fund.
One consideration is the huge increase in immigration arrests and cases since Trump took office. The caseload has increased by 146% .which means a total of 453,948 cases to be resolved. This rise in litigation has also caused a shortage of qualified available judges to hear these cases. This amount of cases has a troubling effect on immigrants and their families as they wait for justice. This leads to long separations and financial burdens from the men who are waiting in jails. Also, judges who are pressured are more likely to make critical mistakes. Some judges state they make these life-altering decisions in 7 minutes or less.
Groups and individuals like Lacey and Larkin have spent their lives and careers protecting the freedoms of all individuals. If the United States is going to find an answer to the problems of immigration and their families, it is going to take more people like them to join the fight.
Instead of living in fear or being intimidated by unjust law officials, each individual has to stand up for what they believe is right and be the voice of those who can’t speak for themselves. Courage doesn’t cost money but it can cost personal losses and we have to decide if we are willing to make that sacrifice for other people.
